Best season ever? It depends!

06/14/2022

There was an interesting debate going on yesterday on Twitter around a couple points such as ambition and our Cornish clubs in the Western League.

Let's touch on the "ambition" mention first - there's a lot of clubs throughout the county showing ambition at the moment, but let's be fair about this, it's a lot easier with the financial backing.

It's all about sustainability as well these days though isn't it and some of these "ambitious" clubs, more than others, would appear to be in a better position to maintain their ride up through the football pyramid. Fair play to all of them, whichever way they wish to be remembered.

Next season we will have clubs in the Western League with Mousehole, Saltash Utd, Helston Ath and Millbrook being joined by Falmouth Town and Torpoint Athletic. By far the most ever at this level. Then of course we mustn't forget Truro City playing in the Southern League Premier South, even if they are playing in Plymouth, but that's another story for another day perhaps!

As far as final league positions go, I would suggest last season (2021-22) has been our most successful, despite no trophies. Before that you have to go back to 1982-83 when we had three clubs - Saltash, Falmouth and Liskeard - finish in the top ten. All three of course are Western League Premier Division champions.

How is success measured though - long term durability at a higher than normal level, or winning things?
